When choosing healthcare coverage, we all seek security and peace of mind.  But when we’re newly eligible for Medicare, or under age 65 and shopping for individual coverage, it can get jumbled and hard to navigate. Knowledge is important in making a good choice.

My dad retired at the age of 67. Being the detailed tool-and-die guy he was, I watched him carefully pour over Medicare information with a keen eye. Dad already knew all about the 1965 Medicare law and what it covered but in an age of increasing healthcare costs, the plan he and Mom chose to protect them from gaps in original Medicare coverage was a task he took seriously.

Before his last day of work, my friend, an experienced insurance agent, came to my parents’ home to enroll them in a Medicare supplement. For years, their supplement absorbed excess charges beyond what original Medicare covered. But when Dad was in hospice care, I was concerned about the bills Mom would have to pay. My friend assured me that because of hospice coverage under Medicare Part A, Mom would have no expenses. It was then I realized the value of President Johnson’s Medicare law, and the importance of lending insurance guidance to others.

A few details about me: I’ve enjoyed a varied work life, including commercial voiceover work, and founding a nonprofit media company that recorded the stories of veterans living with trauma. I earned a degree in Communications from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. I enjoy baking, gardening, the creative arts, and all the culture the Midwest has to offer.
